It seems that so many 'emergencies' or 'crisis' happen when Andrew is out of town. I guess when you are 'out of town' about 50% of the time that is bound to happen though?!
Today - it was our irrigation (sprinker) sysytem pipes burst in our front yard. I didn't know this until I went to go have a shower this morning and there was 'piddly' water pressure in the house. Then I heard the sound of 'running' water outside through my open bedroom window. I can't be certain how long before it happened though - except that when I came home last night at about 6pm it was fine.
I had no clue what to do! There was this cover thing that I knew had something to do with the sprinkers....and that was where the water seemed to be coming from....so I took off the cover and felt around in 'armpit' deep icy cold/muddy water and felt some knobs and levers down there. I managed to turn one of them and that stopped the water actively spilling out. Good. Except I can still hear this 'hissing' sound like water is 'moving' except I can't see where it is going or coming from....only that it isn't 'spilling' out of this cover and going all over the place.
I called Andrew's cell and the Irrigation company (thanfully their sticker was on the control box in our shed).....but the irrigation company didn't answer their phone because it was Sunday. Andrew called me back but couldn't tell me any more than I had already done.
Fast forward several hours....and Stuart tells me that his carpet in his bedroom is SOAKING wet. His bedroom is in the basement in the same corner as where the water was spilling all over the place outside the house. UGH! so I figure I better go and take a look at the levers and knobs of this irrigation thing again because I wasn't happy that I could still 'hear' that hissing sound.....I also called Andrew back....he told to try this other lever thing down there....I had already tried it several times but it was really stiff. Let me tell you - it is not enjoyable feeling around icy cold muddy water. I couldn't see anything in there...I had to feel around and I had to reach so deep that my cheek was touching the water and my one b00b was immersed...all while kneeling in the mud! I did eventually get that one stiff lever to move a 'little' but not all the way....but the hissing stopped...
So this is where it is at right now - a leak from 'who knows where exactly' in our basement....is it through a pipe? the foundations? who knows....but I do know that half of Stuart's room is soggy!
Yay - being a homeowner is sure fun!
okay rant over.
